UNIVERSITY YELLOW v KIAMA | WD1 ROUND 5 | MATCH REPORT

A hat-trick from Tahlia Petrovski secured University Yellow a 3-0 victory over Kiama Quarriers in the Grange Women’s Division 1 competition at Kooloobong Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Bonnie Lassie Cup champions set the standards high just four minutes into the match with Petrovski breaking through the defence and tucking the ball away to take the lead.

University Yellow came close to scoring their second goal just minutes later with Rilee Wagner sending a ball over the top into Kya Godbier before finding Kate Stewart who took a long-range shot but could not capitalise.

Kiama picked up their intensity and soon had their first real chance when Katie French sent a through ball into captain Natalie Henderson who was denied at close-range by goalkeeper Elle Coleman.

It didn’t take long for the Unicorns to react back with a pin-pointed corner from Lisa Tolson into Petrovski who took a powerful shot and scored her second goal for the match.

Cayla Bec began to take control in the backline sending Godbier down the line before finding captain Elise Battin just outside the 18-yard box but could not find the back of the net.

The Quarriers saw their second goal-scoring opportunity with a free-kick just outside the 18-yard box hit by Henderson but could not get past the hands of Coleman.

Petrovski was having an outstanding game before she beat two of her defenders, sending a spectacular ball into striker Godbier who does well to get a shot at goal but is denied by the crossbar.

The Unicorns struggled to get past Kiama’s goalkeeper Kylie Layland on several occasions with Mia Saverino, Tolson and Battin all being denied at goal, but it was their defensive line that kept the Quarriers out until the half-time whistle.

The second half was played at a slower pace with both sides trying to get back into their rhythm and pick up the intensity.

University saw their first goal-scoring opportunity when Stewart was able to break through and get a shot at goal but was denied by the goal post.

In the 65th minute, Petrovski received the ball just outside the 18-yard box before taking a vicious shot at goal but was denied.

Just seconds later, Petrovski found the ball at her feet once again before neatly placing it into the back of the net – scoring her first hat-trick for the season.

The Quarriers were doing everything they could to claw their way back into the game with a one-on-one chance from Henderson and a long-range shot by French but were both cleaned by Coleman.

With Kiama failing to find the back of the net, University Yellow were able to secure all three points from a sensational hat-trick by Petrovski.

Next Sunday will see a top of the table clash with University Yellow as they take on Albion Park at Terry Reserve, whilst the Kiama Quarriers will visit Kooloobong Oval for their second week in a row as they take on University White.
