FFA CUP ROUND 5 REVIEW

The hopes of a Football South Coast side reaching the national draw of the FFA Cup now rest with a single club.

That club is Wollongong Olympic after the two other local sides were knocked out of round five last night.

Olympic progressed through to round six last Wednesday evening courtesy of a 2-1 victory against NPL 3 outfit Inner West Hawks (formerly Stanmore Hawks) at JJ Kelly Park.

Former Wollongong Wolf Chris Price opened the scoring, but the goal was cancelled out by a leveller from Inner Wests’ Peter Yannopoulos.

The winner came through another ex-Wolves player, with Josh Macdonald finding the back of the net with his head late on.

Yesterday night Wollongong United and Unanderra had to travel to Sydney to play Canterbury Bankstown and Liverpool Olympic respectively.

United would have fancied their chances given their strong showings in previous rounds, however, the NPL 3 side put in a dominant display to win 3-0.

Unanderra had the better of their match against the Southern District Soccer Football Association side, but a defensive lapse midway through the second half saw the home side score the only goal of the match.

The draw for round six is expected to take place in the coming days.
