BALGOWNIE v UNIVERSITY | IDL ROUND 10 | MATCH REPORT

University snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-1 win against Balgownie on a nippy afternoon at Judy Masters Oval.

All the goals came in the second period, but the decisive goal came from the penalty mark with Students captain Doug Woodiwiss converting to secure his side’s fourth win of the season.

It was an uneventful opening to the match with both sides finding their feet in the early stages.

Uni carved a couple of openings midway through the half – the first coming 24 minutes in when Joshua Martin sent a shot over the bar from outside the box.

A minute later, Adam Bassuni’s effort from a similar position rolled into the gloves on Josh Sebben.

The Rangers had two great chances over the next 10 minutes with Johnathan Mccreary skewing his effort over at the back post before Zac Craw missed an open goal after a mix-up at the back.

The Students nearly took the lead in the 36th minute as Ryan Sinclair’s cross from the right was volleyed over the crossbar from the edge of the box by Christian Presslaber.

The sides went into the break level despite both having chances to open the scoring.

It didn’t take the away side long after the break to score as just three minutes in Sinclair passed a well-taken half volley from the right side of the box into the far corner.

University continued to probe in search of a second goal and created three chances around the hour mark through Presslaber, Woodiwiss and Bassuni.

The visitors would be made to pay as Balgownie equalised in the 65th minute.

Craw putting right his miss in the first period sending a strong finish past Liam Stevenson after going in one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Eight minutes later, however, University were awarded a penalty; Woodiwiss stepped up and sent an emphatic strike into the roof of the net to snatch the points for the Students.

The result sees University move to 14 points, three points off a place in the top five.

Scott Regent’s team will be looking to build momentum over the next two weeks facing two of their finals rivals (Warilla and Fernhill) at Kooloobong Oval.

This was Balgownie’s third 2-1 defeat in a row after losses to Shell Cove and Oak Flats in just over a week.

The side will look to pick up some points on the road over the coming weeks – travelling to Picton next Saturday who are three points behind the Rangers and then onto the only winless side in the division seven days later; Kiama.
