With the final preliminary round done and dusted in the Cup competition, Shellharbour City, Coniston FC, Kiama Quarriers and Shoalhaven FC all advance to the Semi Finals in April.
Shellharbour City were simply too strong for University, running out 4-0 winners. Samara Wehmeyer got the scoring started after ten minutes with a nice move that saw her split the defence. University weren’t without chances with Jasmine Trajceski looking most likely for the students.
The home side went two up straight after the break, courtesy of Kari Gonzalez before Maddi Costanzo iced the game with two late goals to round out the scoring. The win saw Shellharbour go three from three and top their group.
Kiama Quarriers have made the most of their invitation to this competition and have impressed throughout. In a very open game, they put Thirroul to the sword with a comprehensive 8-2 win. The game kicked into life midway through the first half when goal scoring ace Alyce Quod scored back to back goals in the 21st and 27th minute. Thirroul responded quickly when two goals of their own inside 90 seconds. Mila Gehrke pulling one back before an unfortunate own goal from Kiama saw the game all square. Yasmin Willis scored for the Quarriers just before the break to give them the edge.
Kiama shot out after the break with Neave Keenan getting on the scoresheet before Quod banged in three more second half goals to take her game tally to five. Willis rounded the scoring with a late goal. The six goal spread was enough to see Kiama Quarriers incredibly take top spot in the group stages.
Coniston FC edged out Bulli FC in a tight contest, with Jessica Cruickshank getting the only goal of the game midway through. It’s been a steady improvement for Bulli FC throughout the cup competition, and although they are eliminated, they will take some positives into the season. Coniston on the other hand have been involved in three tight games. The win was enough to see them clinch a semi final spot.
Shoalhaven FC recorded a solid 3-0 win away from home at Woonona to end any hope the Sharks had of making the semi-finals. Taniesha Angelkovski opened the scoring on 22 minutes before second-half goals from Kaitlyn Sennitt and Sarah Kilby sealed the result. The Sharks can now focus on the league as they look to bounce back from their recent set of results, whilst Shoalhaven get the opportunity to defend their title they won last year. Having finished second in their group, they will have to overcome a red-hot Shellharbour City in the Semi Final first.
