Unanderra vs Picton @Unaderra Oval
Unanderra were left frustrated after conceding a heartbreaking late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Picton, with the visitors scoring in the 84th minute to snatch a valuable point from an entertaining and fiercely contested encounter. Both teams enjoyed strong periods throughout the afternoon, creating chances and playing with plenty of intensity, but neither side could find the decisive second goal before the final whistle.
Unanderra made the stronger start and quickly looked dangerous with their direct attacking approach. Their opening goal came after a long ball over the top caught the Picton defence out of position. Jacob Krkovski timed his run perfectly before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper.
Despite the early setback, Picton responded well and gradually began to control possession. They looked determined to work themselves back into the contest, in contrast to Unaderra who relied on long balls rather than short passing combinations through midfield. While Picton enjoyed territory, they struggled to consistently trouble the Unanderra defence, allowing the visitors to remain organised and disciplined behind the ball.
Picton continued to threaten whenever they attacked. Liam Gregory was particularly impressive, using quick feet and clever movement to create problems out wide. His willingness to run directly at defenders kept Unanderra under constant pressure, while Picton also won the majority of second balls, allowing them to sustain attacks and force the home side into repeated defensive actions.
One of the best moments of the opening half came from a dangerous Picton free-kick. An excellent cross delivered into the penalty area saw a powerful header that forced a brilliant save from the Unanderra goalkeeper. The rebound sparked a frantic goalmouth scramble before determined defending eventually cleared the danger. Shortly afterwards, another dangerous long ball and cross required a goal-line clearance. Momentum was surging with Picton but they were unable to put the finishing touches on well constructed attacking displays.
Unanderra’s defensive marking occasionally lacked urgency, allowing Picton to create several half chances. However, the home side finished the first half strongly, delivering more purposeful balls into the penalty area and showing greater attacking intent. A free-kick right on half-time offered another opportunity, but it came to nothing as Unanderra defended comfortably.
The second half began in much the same fashion, with neither side able to establish complete control. It remained an evenly balanced and physical contest, with possession regularly changing hands. Every challenge was fiercely contested, and it increasingly felt as though the result would be decided by a single moment of quality or a costly defensive mistake.
Picton eventually found the equaliser through Jayden Russell showcasing their persistence, looking the more likely side to claim victory during the closing stages. The late goal ensured the points were shared, leaving Unanderra disappointed after surrendering victory so close to full-time, while Picton deserved credit for their resilience and determination throughout the contest.
Fernhill vs Thirroul @Ray Robinson Oval
Fernhill produced one of the comebacks of the season, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Thirroul 5-3 in an action-packed contest that showcased resilience and attacking quality.
Thirroul could hardly have asked for a better start, taking control of the match early and racing to a 2-0 lead after 30 minutes through Robert Gyngell and Ryan Sutcliffe. The away side played with confidence, moving the ball well through midfield and making the most of their opportunities in front of goal. Their early pressure put Fernhill on the back foot, leaving the hosts searching for answers as Thirroul looked capable of extending their advantage even further.
Despite the difficult opening, Fernhill refused to panic. Instead, they gradually worked their way back into the contest by lifting the intensity of their pressing and moving the ball with greater purpose. Their persistence was rewarded with a goal that cut the deficit to 2-1 through their prolific goal scorer Daniel Djukic, giving them the belief they needed to turn the game around.
That goal completely shifted the momentum. Fernhill began to dominate possession and looked increasingly dangerous every time they ventured forward. Their equaliser arrived shortly after halftime, capping off an impressive period of sustained pressure and wiping away Thirroul’s early advantage. Suddenly, the match had been turned on its head, with Fernhill looking the far more confident side.
Their attacking combinations became sharper, while their willingness to run at defenders created space in dangerous areas. It wasn’t long before they completed the comeback, scoring their third goal cementing a hat trick for Djukic’s to take the lead for the first time in the afternoon.
With Thirroul now chasing the game, gaps began to appear at the back, and Fernhill made them pay. The hosts bombarded Thirroul and added a fourth and fifth goal back to back through Hikaru Kawasakiya and Kyle Del after another clinical attacking move, putting themselves firmly in control after what had been a disastrous start.
For Thirroul, it was a frustrating afternoon after such a promising beginning, a late consolation goal by Blake Tonkinson saw the final result 5-3.
The 5-3 scoreline reflected a thrilling contest that had everything: early dominance, dramatic momentum swings, plenty of goals and an impressive comeback. Fernhill’s never-say-die attitude earned them a memorable victory, while Thirroul were left to wonder how a dream start slipped away so dramatically.
Balgownie vs University @Judy Masters Oval
Balgownie were left frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by University, unable to convert an encouraging start into all three points despite controlling large periods of the contest.
Playing at home, Balgownie entered the match as favourites and wasted little time stamping their authority on proceedings. Their positive approach was rewarded early in the first half when they broke the deadlock with a well-worked goal scored by Ryan Chapman that reflected their bright opening. The early strike settled the home side and looked to have put them on track for another important victory.
However, the lead was short-lived as University responded almost immediately. Refusing to be rattled by conceding first, the visitors capitalised on their next meaningful opportunity through Cameron Hanson to draw level, silencing the home crowd and shifting the momentum back towards an evenly balanced contest. The quick equaliser gave University confidence and ensured the remainder of the match would be fiercely contested.
From that point onwards, neither side was able to gain complete control. Balgownie enjoyed spells of possession and looked the more dangerous side when moving forward, while University remained organised defensively and continued to threaten on the counterattack whenever opportunities presented themselves. Every challenge was contested with intensity as both teams battled hard across the park.
The midfield became the key battleground, with both sides working tirelessly to limit space and prevent the opposition from building sustained attacking pressure.
As the second half unfolded, Balgownie continued to press for a winner. Their attacking intent never wavered as they pushed numbers forward in search of the decisive goal, creating several promising moments without being able to produce the finishing touch. University, to their credit, defended resolutely and showed great determination to withstand the pressure while looking dangerous whenever they broke forward.
The final stages were played at a frantic pace as Balgownie searched desperately for the breakthrough that would justify their status as favourites. Despite their persistence, the visitors held firm, frustrating the home side and ensuring the points would be shared at the final whistle.
While a draw was a fair reflection of a match that became an even battle after the opening exchanges, Balgownie will undoubtedly feel disappointed not to have claimed maximum points. Having taken an early lead on home soil, they will see this as two points dropped rather than one gained.
University, meanwhile, can take plenty of confidence from the performance. Their immediate response to falling behind demonstrated resilience, while their defensive discipline throughout the remainder of the contest earned them a valuable point against one of the competition’s strongest sides.
Gerringong vs Dandaloo @Gerry Reserve
Gerringong produced one of the biggest upsets of the season with a courageous 1-0 victory over competition heavyweights Dandaloo in front of their home supporters, earning three priceless points in dramatic fashion.
The opening half was a tightly contested affair, with Dandaloo enjoying more possession and looking to dictate the tempo as expected. Gerringong, however, were disciplined defensively, frustrating the visitors with a compact shape and determined tackling. Despite Dandaloo creating several promising attacks, the home side stood firm to ensure the scores remained locked at 0-0 heading into the break.
The match exploded into life just five minutes into the second half. In the 50th minute, Harrison Burton clinically put away his chance into the back of the net. It was a goal that ultimately proved to be the match winner and one that capped off a brilliant attacking move from the hosts.
The celebrations were short-lived, however, as the game took another dramatic twist. In the aftermath of Burton’s goal, Gerringong were reduced to ten men after receiving a red card in the very same minute for Joshua Newman. Suddenly, the home side faced the daunting challenge of protecting their slender advantage for the remaining 40 minutes against one of the league’s strongest teams.
Dandaloo looked to capitalise on their numerical advantage, piling players forward in search of an equaliser. Their hopes were dealt a significant blow soon afterwards when they too were shown a red card to their midfielder Bradley Acev, reducing both sides to ten men and setting up a tense finish.
Even with the numbers level again, Dandaloo threw everything at the contest. They controlled possession and searched relentlessly for a breakthrough, but Gerringong defended with immense courage and resilience. Every tackle, clearance and save was cheered by the home supporters as the minutes ticked away.
Burton’s decisive strike and the team’s outstanding defensive effort delivered a result few would have predicted before kick-off. For Dandaloo, it was a frustrating afternoon where they were unable to break down a determined opponent, while Gerringong will look to catalyse this momentum into next week.
Shoalhaven vs Oak Flats @Ison Park
Oak Flats strengthened their grip on top spot with an impressive 5-2 victory over Shoalhaven, overcoming an early scare to produce another statement performance that saw the league leaders move eight points clear at the summit.
The home side could not have asked for a better start. Just one minute into the contest, Logan Connell found the back of the net to send the Shoalhaven faithful into celebration and hand the hosts a dream opening. The early goal momentarily stunned Oak Flats, but the competition leaders quickly regrouped and began to assert their authority.
What followed was a devastating first-half blitz that completely changed the complexion of the match. Oak Flats struck three times in the space of 12 minutes, showcasing the attacking quality that has made them the benchmark of the competition this season. Sami Benten levelled the scores with a composed finish before Julian Minutillo took centre stage, netting a clinical brace to turn a 1-0 deficit into a commanding 3-1 advantage.
Despite Oak Flats’ dominance, Shoalhaven refused to let the contest slip away before the break. Midfielder Rocky Lavelle gave the home side renewed hope with a well-taken goal just before half-time, reducing the deficit to 3-2 and ensuring there was still plenty to play for in the second half.
Any hopes of a Shoalhaven comeback were quickly extinguished after the restart. Oak Flats continued to control possession and dictate the tempo, limiting the hosts’ opportunities while creating plenty of chances of their own. Joel Palermo put the result beyond doubt with a superb second-half brace, finishing confidently on both occasions to complete the 5-2 scoreline.
Oak Flats’ ability to respond after conceding inside the opening minute highlighted why they sit atop the competition. Their ruthless attacking football, led by Benten, Minutillo and Palermo, overwhelmed Shoalhaven, who battled hard throughout but were unable to contain the visitors’ relentless pressure.
The victory extends Oak Flats’ lead at the top of the table to eight points, further cementing their status as the team to beat this season. For Shoalhaven, there were positives to take from the goals scored by Logan Connell and Rocky Lavelle, but they were ultimately outclassed by a side whose quality shone through once again.
