Oak Flats secured a hard-fought 2–0 victory over Thirroul in a tightly contested encounter, with the Falcons eventually proving too strong thanks to their defensive structure, attacking quality out wide and willingness to keep pushing forward.
The opening stages were scrappy, with both sides struggling to establish ascendancy. Possession changed hands frequently through the midfield, while both teams found it difficult to build sustained attacking moves.
Oak Flats began to dominate territory, although their attacking fluency was initially lacking. Callum Richards provided an early threat out wide, repeatedly looking to stretch the Thirroul defence.
A dangerous ball whipped into the box by Oak Flats fell to Callum O’Neil who tested the Thirroul goalkeeper, who dealt with the pressure well. At the other end, a swift counter-attack started by Robbie Dhami threatened to open up the Flats defence, but a superb covering tackle from Oak Flats’ Aiden Smith prevented the chance from developing.
Despite not playing their cleanest football early, Oak Flats were beginning to out hustle Thirroul. Callum Richards remained dangerous, delivering a cross that fell to Liam Cergovski, whose effort was miscued.
As the half progressed, Oak Flats began to find their rhythm. Man of the match Lachie Stibners was in everything for the Falcons and had begun to assert himself as part of a dominant afternoon. Oak Flats were beginning to stretch Thirroul through the use of runners in behind the defence and this was starting to pay dividends.
The difference in quality was beginning to show. Oak Flats looked the more composed side, while Thirroul relied on their spirit, defensive discipline and willingness to sit patiently before looking for opportunities on the counter.
A loose pass out from the back handed Oak Flats’ Liam Cergovski an opportunity, but his effort went narrowly wide to the right. Thirroul then threatened from a corner, with their Euan Riedy rising highest only to head over the bar.
Thirroul continued to manufacture a handful of half-chances, but Oak Flats’ scrambling defensive effort repeatedly prevented them from finding a way through.
Eventually, the pressure told.
Oak Flats’ Liam Cergovski produced a moment of individual quality, bringing down a clearance with excellent finesse off the back of a lofted through ball by Callum RIchards allowing his to power past the defenders, control the ball outside the box and, with the goalkeeper caught in no man’s land, produced a superb half-volley that found the back of the net.
The goal gave Oak Flats further confidence, and they began to assert their dominance. Thirroul looked increasingly loose at the back, while difficulties with goal kicks only invited further pressure.
A long-range effort from Oak Flats tested the goalkeeper again. The shot wasn’t cleanly struck and was spilled, with Oak Flats’ Tomas Denyer quickest to react and collect the scraps right on the stroke of half-time. Oak Flats in control 2-0 at the break.
The second half began with Thirroul showing greater intent. Oak Flats’ two centre-backs remained rock solid, however, Thirroul were providing a strong foundation to look for a way back into the contest.
Thirroul’s Liam Meredith was arguably their most dangerous outlet, using his pace to repeatedly threaten the Oak Flats defence.
An early mistake from Oak Flats briefly invited Thirroul back into the match, putting Robbie Dhami through on goal. The goalkeeper came off his line and produced a solid save to deny the opportunity.
Thirroul began to look more dangerous as Oak Flats appeared increasingly content to protect their two-goal advantage rather than continue throwing numbers forward.
A swift Thirroul counter-attack, built around some excellent passing interchange, created another opportunity for Euan Riedy. However, he mistimed his effort, allowing the Oak Flats goalkeeper to make a comfortable save.
Moments later, Thirroul appeared to have broken through again, only for Oak Flats’ Cameron Goodway to produce an outstanding tackle and snuff out the danger.
The second half became increasingly physical, with numerous midfield tackling duels replacing the fluid passing football both sides had hoped to produce.
Ultimately, Thirroul’s determination and work rate were not enough to overcome an Oak Flats side that possessed greater quality and a more organised defensive structure. The Falcons were particularly dangerous through their wide players, while their centre-backs provided the stability needed to withstand Thirroul’s second-half pressure.
When the final whistle blew, Oak Flats were crowned Premier League 2 Youth Grade Champions for 2026, sealing a deserved Grand Final victory.
