Shellharbour Edge Coniston 1-0 in Tense Women’s Premier League Second Grade Grand Final

In challenging wet-weather conditions, two sides that had earned the right to compete on Grand Final day battled it out for premiership glory.

Fierce rivals and the two best sides in the competition across the regular season, neither team was willing to give an inch in the opening stages.

The early exchanges were characterised by disciplined defensive structures, with both sides marking tightly and making life difficult for their opponents in the final third.

Shellharbour began to enjoy the majority of the field position, with their midfield moving the ball effectively and creating opportunities to push Coniston’s defence backwards.

Brina Kohn Gansl for Shellharbour looked threatening with her movement in behind, while Miranda Whitney provided plenty of composure in midfield with a series of neat passing combinations.

Up front, Shellharbour’s Nikola Wilson did an excellent job of holding the ball up and bringing teammates into play, giving her side an important outlet in attack.

Coniston, however, remained dangerous and began to create opportunities of their own.

Karissa High unleashed a volley towards goal, only for the effort to be blocked by Shellharbour’s Lily Harrison.

The game’s most dramatic moment of the opening half came when Shellharbour’s Eliza Schweitzer, operating from left-back, struck a ferocious effort from around 30 yards.

The goalkeeper scrambled as the ball flew narrowly over the crossbar, briefly sparking premature celebrations and confusion among those watching as to whether the effort had actually found the net.

Coniston continued to threaten, with a cross from Claudia Gaudiosi finding Billie Elliot, whose header sailed over the crossbar.

The midfield battle remained fierce, with both teams competing relentlessly for possession through tackles, interceptions and second-ball challenges.

Shellharbour’s set pieces also caused problems, with a corner from Matilda Pearson delivered dangerously into the area and forcing the Coniston goalkeeper into an important punch to relieve the pressure.

At the other end, Coniston’s Ahlyra Ward produced a committed sliding challenge inside the box to deny Shellharbour taking the lead, before Shellharbour’s Miranda Whitney threw everything behind an effort but leaned back slightly too far, sending the ball over the crossbar.

Shellharbour continued to look particularly dangerous from corners, repeatedly testing Coniston’s defensive organisation.

The score remained locked at 0-0 at the interval.

Coniston emerged from the break with renewed intent, immediately beginning to win the territorial battle and create opportunities.

Their pressure nearly produced the opening goal when Shellharbour’s goalkeeper made a mistake and presented Skye Simpson with a chance to shoot without the presence of a goalkeeper, but the effort was blocked off the line ultimately becoming an instrumental moment in the game by Shellharbour’s Lauren Petrovic. This moment of brilliance from Petrovic paved the way for a dramatic momentum shift for Shellharbour.

Shellharbour’s Rilee Wagner then came close after a corner deflected into her path, but her half-volley was miscued.

As the half progressed, Shellharbour began to find their rhythm again.

They started to threaten with through balls into the channels, while their players became increasingly effective at winning the 50/50 contests that had characterised the midfield battle throughout the afternoon.

With the game finely poised, neither side was prepared to concede ground.

Then came the decisive moment.

Shellharbour’s Eliza Schweitzer delivered a beautiful ball towards the back post, creating chaos inside the Coniston penalty area.

What followed was a frantic scramble as the ball ricocheted between players and took multiple deflections before eventually falling to Rilee Wagner who made no mistake from close range.

Coniston were forced to push forward in search of an equaliser allowing Shellharbour to capitalise on a more open defensive line. Following a clever switch of play, winger Matilda Pearson found herself one-on-one with the Coniston keeper with a golden opportunity to kill the game for City. Her shot hit the post and went wide, seeing Coniston still with time to mount a comeback.

Shellharbour’s defence stood firm as the minutes ticked away.

After a fiercely contested Grand Final in difficult conditions, the final whistle confirmed Shellharbour as Women’s Premier League Second Grade champions.

It was a match decided by fine margins, with both sides demonstrating why they had earned their place on Grand Final day.
