SHARKS DOWN CONISTON

In a back-and-forth match between the two sides, a lack of a finishing touch from Coniston allowed Woonona to run rampant at JJ Kelly.

Woonona looked to open the scoring within six minutes after a well-placed cross from Tess Stephens found an unmarked Brittany Ring on the edge of the 6-yard box. Coniston’s Zoe Barling sprang into action and pushed the ball past the post for a corner.

Just three minutes later Karissa High was through for a one on one after Simona Spaseska dribbled up the field and played a through ball through the backline. From the edge of the penalty area, she struck the ball across the face as the ball was inches off the bottom right corner.

In the 16th minute Stephens put the Sharks into the lead with a brilliant finish, firing the ball into the top left corner from the near post.

A deep set-piece for Woonona almost saw the lead double after Barling dropped the ball into the path of Zoe Anderson who could not manage to direct the ball into the open net.

In the 24th minute, Coniston searched for an equaliser through Madelaine Steel. Steel cut inside beating Kailee Moore, she struck the ball with her left foot straight at Anna Simon who caught the ball comfortably.

Ten minutes later the Sharks doubled their lead with Ring scoring a header at the back post. She beat Claire Nguyen up for the cross played from the right by Jessica Beale.

As the first half ended Spaseska had two chances. The first was a shot from distance going across the face of the goal just past the right post clearing Simon’s hands. Her second chance came after a cross from Nguyen cleared the defence, she took a chance but could not catch the ball and put it wide of the bottom left corner.

The second half was back and forth with no clear chances for either side. Neither keeper was tested as balls flew into the boxes before being cleared. Backlines remained solid holding out each side.

There was one major outlet, however. In the 51st minute Beale struck the ball from a great distance as it slammed into the left post and into the top corner. Barling was off her line and could do nothing but scramble as the ball cleared her as the away crowd was on their feet.

Woonona will face UOW at Ocean Park on Sunday the 22nd of June at 2:30pm while Coniston face top of the table Shellharbour on the same day at JJ Kelly Park, kicking off at 3pm.
