⚽️ Trailblazer. Advocate. Lifelong Football Lover. Meet Carol Lewiston. 💙
From the schoolyards of the Illawarra in the early ‘80s to Walking Football pitches today, Carol Lewiston has spent over four decades championing women’s football — on the field, behind the scenes, and in the hearts of those she’s inspired.
Carol began playing in 1981 when opportunities for women were few. After starting out in school competitions, she joined local clubs including Dapto, Kiama, Kanahooka, and eventually South Coast United, where she played until 2002. She also represented the Illawarra in national futsal titles across the ACT and Sydney.
Her love for the game extended beyond playing — joining the Illawarra Women’s Soccer Association committee while still an active player. She worked alongside fellow pioneers to build pathways for future female footballers, and was honoured with Football South Coast Life Membership in 2000 – a reflection of her enduring commitment to the game she loves.
Carol has also given back through coaching MiniRoos, mentoring junior players, and continuing her involvement in football through her family – her husband coaches, her son plays in the UK, and her grandson proudly wears the jersey for South Coast Flame FC.
Even now, she’s still lacing up — Eighteen months ago, Carol discovered Walking Football, a version of the game tailored for players who still crave the camaraderie and joy of football. Since that first trial session, she’s been hooked — playing in several tournaments including the local “Walk the Field” tournament hosted by Football South Coast and UOW. @walkthefield2025
“When I thought my playing days were over, Walking Football gave me a second chance to enjoy the game I love — and connect with amazing women who felt the same. I haven’t looked back since! To all the past players out there — consider coaching, refereeing and walking football to stay part of this great game!”
👉 Carol is living proof that football really is for life.
“I’m so proud of how far women’s football has come in Australia. Whether you’re just starting out, want to play for fun, or keen to volunteer and help out — there’s a club ready to welcome you.”
Thank you, Carol, for being a pillar of the football community and inspiring generations of players to follow in your footsteps. 💫
