SHARKS EDGE PAST WANDERERS AT OCEAN PARK | WD1

Woonona edged past Warilla 1-0 at Ocean Park on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the Women’s Division 1. Sinead Bailey scored the match’s only goal just before the hour mark getting on the end of a freekick before nudging the ball beyond Jenna Irish in the Wanderers goal. This was the Sharks’ first victory of the season after losing 2-0 to last season’s grand finalists University in round one.

It was the visitors who created the first opportunity of the match when six minutes in, a cross from Emma Gomez on the right-hand side found Irene-Maree Kyriacou at the back post who played Christian Videla at the top of the box who placed her shot wide of the near post.

Straight away, Woonona went down the other end with the ball finding Ainsley Hawes who cut in from the right-hand side but dragged the shot off target with her left foot. Hawes would threaten twice more in the next five minutes when in the tenth minute a ball in from the right-hand side from Sinead Bailey found her inside the box. On the turn, she attempted to find the top corner but missed the target. A minute later, Hawes tried her luck once more with a right-footed shot after cutting in from the left-hand side but was unable to trouble the keeper.

Warilla responded to the Sharks’ pressure in the 12th minute through Kari Gonzalez who took aim from the top of the box but side-footed her effort over the bar.

Neither side created anything of substance until the last 15 minutes of the half when a flurry of chances from the hosts saw the side go into the break looking the more likely to open the scoring.

In the 38th minute, Bailey picked the ball up on the left-hand side and produced a strike which required Warilla custodian Jenna Irish to provide a save. Two minutes later, Woonona came forwards again this time through Jordan Wheatley who beat a Warilla defender at the top of the box before hitting a shot which narrowly missed the bottom corner.

Despite the hosts having ample opportunities to trouble the scoreboard, the sides went into the sheds goalless.

The Sharks picked up where they left off in the first half creating another opportunity just three minutes in. Kyah Humphrey firing goalwards from the edge of the box with the ball deflecting back to her presenting the forward with another opportunity this time prompting a save from Irish.

Ten minutes later, the hosts broke the deadlock. A freekick awarded near the halfway line was delivered into the box falling at the feet of Bailey who made no mistake from close range putting the ball beyond Irish.

Heading into the final quarter of an hour of the match, the hosts looked to extend their advantage. In the 77th minute, Humphrey set off on a marauding run down the left-hand side ghosting past several players seeing a shot well-saved at the near post by Irish.

From the resulting corner, the ball was played to Meika Quinn on the edge of the box who turned and placed a shot just wide of the far post. Woonona won the ball from the goal kick and found Sinead Bailey on the right-hand side who drove a ball across the face of goal which narrowly missed several Sharks’ players running into the box.

Despite the home side’s pressure throughout the game, Warilla nearly equalised with ten minutes to play when Christina Videla took aim from the left-hand side 20 meters from goal and narrowly missed the target with the ball dropping onto the top of the net.

Woonona held on to secure a slim victory over Warilla.

Woonona coach Mick Sutton was pleased with the performance but still felt his side could’ve added more goals to the scoreline. Sutton also praised the performance of forward Sinead Bailey.

“For the majority of the game I thought we parked ourselves in their half,” Sutton said.

“We were just unfortunate to not take a few more chances that we had.

“They most probably deserved another two or three goals.

“Her performance was superb.

“She did everything that we asked of her and it’s most probably the best game I’ve seen her have for a long time.”
