OAK FLATS v UNIVERSITY | IDL ROUND 13 | MATCH REPORT

Oak Flats battled through both horrific natural conditions as well as a University onslaught to claim a crucial 1-0 victory at Keith Bond Oval.

The wind was blowing and the rain was pouring but the match played on. Both sides entered the contest just one point apart on the table, eyeing a finals spot.

The opening stanza went majority the way of the visitors and long range efforts from Adam Bassuni and Alex Coetzer forced some early saves by Valon Rizvani in the Falcons goal.

Despite being on the back foot for the opening half hour, Oak Flats began to play their way back into the game and against the run of play, took the lead in the 35th minute.

It looked to be a simple set-piece routine that saw Lance Condello flick on a corner to Jason Goldsmith who powered his header into the top corner.

The second 45 seemed to be the same for the students as they controlled the ball and created more of the chances.

Nice interplay up the left from Josh Crapis and Bassuni set up Woodiwiss in the box but his shot while falling trickled wide of the goal in the 52nd minute.

Rizvani kept his side in the lead with a remarkable double save, firstly parrying away a Woodiwiss dipping free-kick before an outstretched arm kept the rebound from Bassuni out.

In the 68th minute, Bassuni was denied again. This time his low shot slammed into the post as the Falcons were able to clear.

The hosts had their first real opportunity of the half in the 71st minute when Kyle Del’s cross was palmed away before Jarryd Vinton’s shot was deflected wide.

Woodiwiss thought he had the equaliser following Cameron Hanson’s cross but his header was stopped on the line by Rizvani.

The Falcons then had the chance to put the game to bed as substitute Lachlan Rowe rolled his defender up the left before cutting it back to Josh Eagleton. However, the winger couldn’t find the target as he blasted his attempt over the bar from close range.

All last ditch efforts from the students were cancelled out as the Falcons picked up a crucial three points.

The win sees Oak Flats jump the students into fifth spot, just one point behind Fernhill. The Falcons are back on the road in round 14, travelling to Picton.

The loss for University sees them slip out down to sixth on the ladder. They return home next weekend to take on Berkeley at Kooloobong Oval.
